Is digital painting really PAINTING?

Lately, I’ve been talking to people about my work more. People who don’t necessarily know how digital art works. I discovered that a lot of them don’t know that digital painting is just that: painting, but with a digital pen and a screen instead of a paintbrush and canvas.

The pieces digital painters make are hand-made and go through most of the processes that traditional painters also go through: from sketch, to a first lay-in of color, to refinement until the painting is done.

Is digital painting really PAINTING?⠀ ⠀ I’ve had that question a few times, from people who aren’t familiar with the process of digital painting. Artists probably recognise that meme where an artist goes to the computer and presses the “make design” button. People who are not from the industry seem to think that somehow the computer does a lot of the work and we whip things up in minutes.⠀ ⠀ So here’s a video to give you some insight into the process. I’ve sped it up so it takes about 30 seconds to see the whole thing, but actually I spent about an hour and 40 minutes on this image (so 200 times longer than it takes you to watch this video!).⠀ ⠀ Any questions?
